Trash and Recycling

To use the Williamstown Transfer Station for trash disposal, recycling, or composting, residents must have an annual Transfer Station Permit sticker displayed on their vehicle. Trash disposal also requires Trash Bag Tags. Most recycling and composting services are included at no additional cost.

Transfer Station Permit Stickers

A Transfer Station Permit allows you to recycle, compost, and dispose of trash (with required Trash Bag Tags).

How to purchase a permit sticker:

  • Online: Pay by electronic check, credit card, PayPal, or Venmo. Your sticker will be mailed to you.  PAY ONLINE
  • By Mail: Complete the permit form and mail it with a check to: Collector’s Office, 31 North Street, Williamstown, MA 01267
  • In-Person: Visit the Collector’s office on the second floor of Town Hall at 31 North Street, Williamstown, MA 01267.

Trash Bag Tags

One tag must be displayed on each 15-gallon bag of trash. For bags larger than 15 gallons, two tags must be displayed.

Trash Bag Tags cost $2 each and are sold sheets of five for $10. The tags can be purchased at:

  • Aubuchon Hardware (Williamstown)
  • Wild Oats Market (Williamstown)
  • Stop & Shop (North Adams)
  • Tags may also be obtained at the Transfer Station where you will be asked to sign an invoice and be billed at the end of the month.

Recycling

Residents with a Transfer Station Permit may drop off most paper and recyclable containers at no charge. Some items, such as demolition materials, TVs, computers, and other items, require a fee. For a full list of accepted materials and fees, please review the current Transfer Station Guidelines.

Composting

Residents with a Transfer Station Permit may drop off food waste at no additional cost, including fruits and vegetables, dairy, meat, and bones.

How to compost at the Transfer Station:

  • Deposit food waste into the totes located in the red Compost Shed, on the right as you enter the facility.
  • Food waste is collected by Tommy’s Compost Services and transported to farms for composting.
  • If using bags, use only BPI-certified compostable bags. NO plastic bags are allowed, as they contaminate the compost load.
  • Learn more about acceptable composting materials at Tommy’s Compost Service.
  • Residents may purchase an optional EcoCaddy container for collecting food waste. Choose a 6-gallon container for $35, or a 1.5 gallon container for $15. For more information, please contact the DPW Office Manager at (413) 597-8366.
