The Williamstown Planning Board is an elected five member Board with varied and complex responsibilities, governed by the General Laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and our town’s Zoning Bylaw and Zoning District Map.
The Planning Board is involved with developing planning policy on a wide range of planning issues including: land use, environmental, economic development, housing, transportation and open space. The Planning Board reviews all Preliminary and Definitive Subdivision plans, as required by Massachusetts General Laws, Chapter 41. The Planning Board also reviews all Approval Not Required plans, Site Plans, and a handful of Special Permits. The Planning Board is also responsible for creating long term planning documents and researching demographic and economic trends and how they might impact our community. The Board uses this information when developing zoning bylaw amendments. An excellent resource to learn about the work of the Board is to review the Berkshire Regional Planning Commission’s Planning Board Resource Book. BRPC Planning Board Resource Book.
