What inspections are required for rental properties?
Apartments and other long term rental properties (called “dwelling units”) require an inspection prior to reoccupation every time after a unit has been vacated. Short term rentals (called “rooming units”) require annual inspections. The Health Inspector performs Pre-Rental Inspections to determine whether rental units meet the state sanitary code. Inspections help landlords identify code violations early so they can be addressed prior to occupation. Inspections also give renters assurance by confirming that the unit meets minimum health standards at the time of the inspection. After passing an inspection, a Certificate of Compliance is issued for the rental unit. The landlord, owner, manager, or person in charge of a rental unit must apply online for a pre-rental inspection on our website. Click the “HOUSING CODE GUIDE” link below. Then look for the “Apply Online” button in the upper right of that page. Sign in to complete your application. Once your application has been submitted and the fee has been paid, the Health Inspector will review the application and reach out to schedule an inspection.
How can renters confirm inspection records and Certificate of Occupancy status?
Renters have the right to know whether a unit has been inspected and if a Certificate of Occupancy is on file. To find out, contact the Health Department through the contact form on the Health Department page.
