Department of Public Works (DPW) crews will be flushing fire hydrants in neighborhoods marked with yard signs. This routine maintenance cleans water mains, removes built-up sediment (iron and manganese), maintains water quality and taste, and ensures hydrants are fully operational for fire protection

Please check the homepage of this website for announcements about scheduled hydrant flushing.

What to Expect

  • Temporary water discoloration or slight pressure fluctuations
  • Water visible on streets near hydrants or water main blow-offs
  • DPW crews actively flushing hydrants and directing water to appropriate areas
  • Possible short-term traffic or parking impacts
  • Flushing typically lasts 30–60 minutes per street

After Flushing

Water discoloration is common but should clear quickly. Run a cold tap for several minutes, up to 15 minutes, until the water runs clear. Before using hot water, run the cold water first to prevent sediment from entering your water heater. A mild chlorine smell may occur during flushing and is normal; it will dissipate on its own or by letting water sit uncovered.

If you experience little or no water pressure during flushing, please contact the DPW office at (413) 458-3383.

Hydrant flushing is a necessary part of maintaining a safe and reliable drinking water system and is not considered a waste of water.
