The Main Street bridge over Hemlock Brook has been reconstructed by MassDOT and is re-opened to traffic. The bridge is located west of the Field Park rotary between Belden Street and Buxton Hill Road. Replacement was necessary due to excessive deterioration present at a few of the existing bridge beams.
The work included bridge demolition, modifications to existing abutments and wingwalls, fabrication and erection of new structural steel, installation of concrete bridge deck, bridge sidewalk and approach slabs, installation of railing, utilities on bridge, full depth reconstruction of roadway approaches, highway guardrail, sidewalk, curb, landscaping, drainage improvements, sanitary sewer, gas main, excavation and grading, temporary pedestrian and utility bridge, and removal of AC pipe.
In the Spring, plantings will be installed, and some minor items will be buttoned up. Current completion date is May 20, 2026.
Current conditions: Smoke from wildfires to the north and west is affecting air quality in the northern Berkshires. The Air Quality Index (AQI) is currently above 100 — Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups.
