The Health Department is committed to protecting public health and ensuring compliance with a broad range of health and safety regulations. We oversee food service establishments, septic systems and well construction, lodging facilities, public swimming pools, recreational camps for children, residential and lodging housing standards, and tobacco control regulations.
We also investigate nuisance complaints, report and disseminate information on communicable diseases, monitor water quality at Margaret Lindley Park, and regularly update the town’s public health emergency preparedness plans. In addition, we work closely with the Building Inspectors to ensure compliance with permits that involve both departments.
Apartments and other long term rental properties (called “dwelling units”) require an inspection prior to reoccupation every time after a unit has been vacated. Short term rentals (called “rooming units”) require annual inspections. >>> READ MORE ABOUT RENTAL INSPECTIONS

In Spring of 2026, Williamstown installed five air quality sensors around town. These sensors, called PurpleAir Flex sensors, let anyone check local air quality online.
The PurpleAir sensors measure airborne particulate matter – tiny particles from sources such as smoke, dust, and other pollutants that can affect your breathing and health. >>>READ MORE ABOUT AIR QUALITY
When homes and buildings are close up, indoor air collects more particles, odor, and moisture. Poor indoor air quality can trigger symptoms for some people. And when people spend time indoors together, viruses can spread through shared air.
Visit our Indoor Air Quality page to learn simple steps you can take to make indoor air healthier, including information about air cleaners and how to make your own. >>>READ MORE
