Police Firearms Training: What You’re Hearing

If you’ve heard repeated gunshots in the north end of town, it’s most likely police officers completing required firearms training at the Town’s outdoor range. The range is not open to the public.

This local training saves taxpayer money. Under an agreement with neighboring police agencies, those agencies pay for the firearms instructor who trains our officers. In exchange, they use our range for their own training. Keeping training local also means no out-of-town travel, overtime, or mileage costs. And because these regional partners are the officers who may back us up in an emergency, the arrangement keeps them trained and ready too.

Training takes place during daylight hours and ends at sunset. Most sessions are scheduled through December, with some continuing into the spring.

If you hear gunfire somewhere else, or something seems wrong, call 911 right away.
